Setting long, mid, and short-term goals is a great way to keep you focused on your ultimate goals and it gives you a lot of little wins along the way!
However, tracking your daily progress is critical to reaching any of your goals.
Why is tracking your goals necessary?
It may seem like a lot of extra work to track your goals and write down what you are doing.
This extra work is necessary for two reasons.
1. It allows you to monitor what you are actually doing on a daily basis to reach your goals.
An example of this would be if someone is trying to gain weight. The most important part of gaining weight is how many quality calories you are putting into your body. If you don’t track your caloric intake, you may think you are eating 5,000 calories a day, but are actually under eating by about 1,500. Simply writing down what you eat and the calories attached to that will allow you to count your calories and KNOW you have reached your daily caloric intake.
2. It will allow you to see what things you are doing that are helping you reach your goals and what things that aren’t working.
If you have been working towards a goal diligently for a month and haven’t seen any progress, you will be able to go back to your daily tracking to see what you have done. This will allow you to make adjustments to your daily routine that can help you make progress.
I will go back to the food tracking for this example. If you are tracking what time and how much you are eating, you will be able to gauge the reason behind not having any energy at your workout. If you consistently eat 5 hours before a workout but feel lethargic during it, you can adjust your eating time until you feel the energy.
The bonus reason as to why tracking your progress is important is because if you consistently track your daily activities over a long course of time, you will be able to look back at your body of work and see how much time and energy you really put in!
To this day, I still have old weight program sheets that showed the date, my weight, which exercise, and how much weight I used. I can look and see how much weight I gained/lost, how much stronger I got over a course of time, and if that program actually worked.
Now, I can use that same program for myself again (because it worked) or I can give it to my players because I know what the results were! This would not be possible if I had not tracked it!
Go ahead and give it a try for the next 30 days! It is a very eye-opening activity! You may find out you aren’t working as hard as you believe you are!
